Rainforest Alliance – The frog in the service of the earth

"I think that owning land and not destroying it is the most beautiful art one could ever wish for."

These words by Andy Warhol, a renowned nature and art lover, are not only a message but also a call to action for all of humanity. Our Earth is unique – and at the same time extremely fragile. It is up to us to protect it, support it, and, if necessary, care for it.

That is precisely the goal of Rainforest Alliance, an international environmental organization founded in 1987. Originating as a protest movement against rainforest deforestation, it has been supporting farmers, communities, and businesses along the entire coffee value chain for over thirty years – always with a focus on sustainability.

The frog as a symbol of hope

Since 2020, the Rainforest Alliance has used a new seal that embodies the organization's new identity following its merger with UTZ. This certification provides farmers and businesses with an important mark of recognition, clearly demonstrating their commitment to sustainability and reducing environmental impact.

The seal is far more than a commercial symbol – it stands for hope and progress, for a future that is cleaner and more respectful towards all living beings.

Continuous improvement, transparency, and accountability are the three cornerstones of the Rainforest Alliance. They form the foundation of a philosophy that has been consistently pursued for over three decades. The organization believes that a good product can only be created when nature and producers work in harmony.

With its "Follow the Frog" campaign, the Rainforest Alliance aims to establish its symbol – the frog – as a sign of unity, perseverance, and determination. It represents a mission dedicated to protecting our planet.

Environmentally friendly and fair products

To receive Rainforest Alliance certification for environmental sustainability, products must meet 94 criteria across ten categories. These include environmental and social management, ecosystem conservation, wildlife protection, and water protection. Equally important are fair wages, safe and healthy working conditions, good relationships with local communities, and responsible management of pesticides, fertilizers, soil, and waste.

These requirements demonstrate the organization's comprehensive responsibility – not only for nature and the environment, but also for the people involved in the production of the goods. Combating forced labor and exploitation, as well as promoting fair working and living conditions, are among the Rainforest Alliance's core objectives.

Since its founding, the organization has focused on cooperation and trust. It aims to strengthen the relationships between producers and consumers so that all stakeholders can participate in the sustainable growth of the sector.

Responsibility with pride

The Rainforest Alliance seal is therefore a source of pride for every certified producer. It represents the awareness of doing good work not only for themselves, but also for others – work that aims for a sustainable, fair and fulfilling life for everyone involved in the value chain, from the first picker to the engineer.

Especially in times when the climate crisis increasingly threatens our planet, this mission gains in importance. Now more than ever, commitment is needed – for a world in which environmental awareness and responsibility go hand in hand.
